The settlers chose the name Swampfield for their town, although the native Indians also called it Paquiack ("to open the plain" or "to clear the land"), and in October 1687 a court ordered a name for Danbury. When the postcode was introduced in 1963, it was given the code 06810 (then common with rural New Fairfield in the north), but when the postcodes were introduced, they were given "Danbury" instead. Faced with little resistance from the Patriot troops, the British took to the barricades and set fire to all the buildings of the city, as well as most of the streets and buildings. British ships anchored in Long Island Sound and marched on to Danbury from New York City to New Haven. At the same time, 123 large buildings were razed to the ground, 104 families were relocated and roads were rebuilt or relocated. In its early days, Danbury was an agricultural community, but as time went on, Danbury became an industrial town, and as a result, its population grew.

From 1892, hat production became one of the most important industries in the city, and in 1904, the city supplied 75% of its hat bodies to industry, with Danbury producing 24 American hats in 1904. The industry was revolutionized when large hat factories began to abandon the pure production of hats and bodies and supply them to small hat shops for finishing. By 1920, the hat industry was in decline, and by 1923, only six manufacturers remained in Danbury. At that moment, things were going up for a city like Danburg: "We all make hats here, we all do it here.

Today, there are still more than 1,000 hat shops, hat factories and hat repair shops as well as a large number of hat and body shops.
